Evaluation Question 1: GENRE CONVENTIONS

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

My film trailer of A Question Of Identity is slick, fast-paced and gripping creating suspense and jeopardy, in turn attracting and addressing my target audience (18+ male and females). It can compete with the current and continuing audience fascination for the high production values and slick continuity editing of Hollywood blockbusters, franchises and superhero films, due to its strong gripping, female leading storyline, high quality production values and relevant storyline to the current affairs of migration in Europe.

To answer the question above, I have annotated my film trailer with the genre codes and conventions.

My group and I have enjoyed working together to answer Evaluation Question 1: Genre Conventions. We understand that due to working together as a group, the examiner can't decipher how much each individual has contributed to each point made above in the YouTube video.

Therefore I have made 5 points below that illustrate the effectiveness of 5 key scenes in the film trailer conveying the thriller, detective genre codes and conventions:

The Migrant Scene was extremely effective in conveying thriller, detective genre codes and conventions due to its near pitch, mysterious low-key lighting creating a dangerous, fearful, trepidatious and sinister atmosphere. The diegetic sound spoken by Sydney in the three person shot, "You want your passports, don't you?" is effective due to its confrontational, commanding, aggressive loud low-beat tone; further suggesting a sense of jeopardy and suspense through the illegal dealings of passports to helpless, vulnerable and desperate migrants. This feature is common to the thriller, detective genre, heavily adding to the perplex murder mystery storyline; further attracting and addressing the audience. Thereafter, the non-diegetic fast paced, orchestral heavy beat soundtrack intensifies, further attracting and addressing the audiences' attention to the next stage of the storyline.

Aaron running through the car park was significant in conveying thriller, detective genre codes and conventions due to its fast panning shot from right to left influencing a sense of quick pace, speed and  a 'chasing' motion through the hazy, stormy weathered suburban city shopping centre car park. Previously, Aaron is seen from a high-angle shot frantically running up an emergency stair-case, followed by a hard cut to a low angle shot of Aaron's feet and hands on the railing. This creates a sense of emotional desperation showing his significant dedication to his dead sisters murder case. Aaron's dedication to avenging his sisters death was a key factor I wanted to emphasise throughout the trailer as I knew it would successfully attract and address our audience. Transitioning into the shot above, the non-diegetic fast paced, orchestral heavy beat soundtrack intensifies and become lower in pace. This creates a sense of bewildering pressure, suspense and jeopardy, complimenting the fast panning shot hinting that combat and conflict is soon to be revealed between Aaron and Sydney's murder suspect; creating enigma. This further engages the audiences attention and attracts them to watch the film.

The wide angle, behind the shoulder shot of Aaron taking photographs of The Ghost influences a sense of investigative, under-ground, illegal behaviour amongst the audience which is common in the thriller, action genre. The two SFX flashes effectively symbolise Aaron taking photographs on the camera; grabbing the audiences attention. The low volume heavy beat soundtrack temporarily quietens    attracting the audiences attention to Aaron mysteriously making the photographs. The second flash professionally and smoothly transitions to an inter-title in the following scene. The low key semi-dark lighting further emphasises a questionable, illegal and investigative atmosphere, common to the thriller, action genre.

My group and I completed research of professional production company idents before constructing the BLACKLIGHT PRODUCTIONS ident. A production company ident is a key convention of a professional film trailer, further fulfilling the codes and conventions of a professional film trailer. This successfully attracted and addressed my audience to my film, as well as other action thriller films from the same production company. Although BLACKLIGHT PRODUCTIONS doesn't feature non-diegetic sound, the mood music added is similar to white-noise creating a muffled, buffering tone suggesting ill fate, further progressed by heavy, beat orchestral drumming developing the trailer.

The close up shot of Aaron commanding, "I will not rest until that murderer is locked up!"  is significantly successful conveying thriller, detective genre codes and conventions due to its near pitch, mysterious low-key lighting creating a dangerous, fearful, trepidatious and sinister atmosphere. The diegetic sound spoken by Aaron in the single person shot is effective due to its confrontational, commanding, aggressive loud low-beat tone; further suggesting a sense of jeopardy and suspense whilst Aaron is proving his innocence.
