RESEARCH: JURASSIC WORLD MARKETING CAMPAIGN

I have completed a case study of Jurassic World on info.gram. Info.gram is a really useful tool as it allows to be present research in a fun, imaginative format that is easy to read and view on my blog roll quickly.

I looked at the class studies in Gareth Lowrie's presentation of the marketing campaign for Jurassic World (Universal Pictures). This will allow me to comment on the way that the trailer forms part of the distribution strategy including the Poster & Advertising (P&A) campaign. From completing this case study I have learned that the trailer is part of a bigger marketing campaign including the films social media platforms including the films official Instagram page (@jurassicworld), official LEGO game Instagram page (@legojurassic), official LEGO game Twitter page, official Twitter page (@jurassicparkiv), official LEGO game Facebook page (Jurassic World: The Game), trending hashtag on both Instagram and Twitter (#JurassicWorld & #JurassicWaterloo during their campaign at Waterloo Train station), official Facebook page (Jurassic World) for example as well as cast interviews, P&A campaigns and teaser trailer releases, for example. From doing so the distributor is meeting the rules of the films engagement with its target audience globally; contributing and building a buzz for the films release. Also using this social media platforms interconnect through each other (being able to share photos on Instagram and sharing them onto Twitter); creating continuting and gaining a wider audience through successfully social media marketing making a wider audience aware of the films release, in turn creating a buzz.

HERE is a link to my film trailer analysis on Jurassic World I made using Emaze

Whilst using Info.gram to present my case study of Jurassic World's marketing campaign, due to Info.gram only allowing a minmum of 10 photos in the entire infographic, I decided that it would be appropriate to make a number of collages of relevent photos (to the information I was presenting) on PicMonkey. PicMonkey is really useful tool as it allows me to to edit and present photographs in imaginative, legible formats making them eye-catching to the viewer.

RESEARCH: MINI CASE STUDY OF A DAY TO DIE HARD AND MINI TRAILER MADE ON THE FILM EDUCATION WEBSITE

I went onto the Film Education website on a page that specialises in the making of film trailers. The Film Education company recently had been denied of any more government funding; luckily the company is now independently owned so students such as me can be provided with useful information about the planning, researching, construction and editing of films.

I completed an activity where I had to make a short mini-movie trailer using a 'teaching trailers' software indented into the websites page. I used my own knowledge of film trailer codes and conventions as well as ways in which trailers are used to attract audiences to complete my own cut of a film trailer in the online trailer editor, using clips, soundtracks and titles also used in professional trailers like the 6 trailers I analysed previously (found HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE, HERE & HERE).

From completing this activity on A Day to Die Hard, I gained inspiration for my future film trailer as well as useful information about the purpose of film trailers and the ways in which film distributors use Poster and Advertising methods to promote the film. I will be using methods such as making a film poster, making a magazine cover or radio trailer to attract my target audience.
HERE is my mini-trailer on A Day to Die Hard.

P&A posters using befunky

I made a photo collage above of A Day to Die Hard P&A posters on befunky photo editing and collage making website. The befunky website is an extremely useful tool as it allows me to make photo collages easily and quickly, presenting the photos in an eye-catching and bright format. Searching for the accompanying posters allows me to observe the use of key visual codes, such as images, character, genre and typography.

Before I started making my mini-trailer I answered briefly the questions provided at the bottom of the page. I have made an infographic using Infogr.am; this infographic online collage maker has proven to be extremely useful as I can quickly upload information quickly using a new eye catching, imaginative format.

RESEARCH: FILM TRAILER CODES AND CONVENTIONS

By using my Trello planner for organisation (allowing me to keep up to date with my work each week), I have completed a Piktochart collating film trailer codes and conventions.

Piktochart is an infographic and is an extremely using tool as it allows me to organise and plan ahead my project tasks; allowing me to be organised and efficient when hectic stages of my project arise such as the construction (shooting) stages.

With the help of websites such as the Film Education website as well as the 6 trailers I analysed previously, I have had the correct, useful resources to help me devise the codes and conventions of film trailers.

Stages of making my PicMonkey collage

Selection of 3 questions on Film Education website that was helpful

Above I have made a PicMonkey collage of 3 useful questions that were featured on the Film Education website. PicMonkey is a useful tool as it allows me to make imaginative photo collages of selections of photos or screenshots presenting them in eye-catching and legible formats.

Below is the overall list of 6 useful questions provided on the Film Education website that I developed in my Piktochart on Film Trailer Codes and Conventions.

RESEARCH: FILM EDUCATION TRAILER CODES AND CONVENTIONS

I went onto the Film Education website on a page that specialises in Film Trailer Codes and Conventions. I completed a quiz on the codes and conventions of the film trailer genre; this was effective and a useful task to complete because it made me think about what I had previously learned about film trailer codes and conventions as well as the purpose and effect of them.

GOOGLE DOCS GROUP

I decided to set up a group chat on GoogleDocs allowing each of us to debate on different ideas for our film trailer. I emailed my group (Demi, Sophie and Marcus) the link to the GoogleDocs page I set up for our 'A2 Media Studies Film Trailer'. GoogleDocs proves to be a useful tool as it allows us to type on one available, electronic document (on each of our screens) at the same time, recording our notes and changes to our project. I think GoogleDocs will be useful also in the future as I can upload photos taken on my iPhone straight onto our document; allowing me to get a instant response.

An example of a call sheet I will share on GoogleDocs
We will be using this media platform to upload: storyline ideas for our trailer, inspirational photos, movie clips or YouTube videos to help us be inspired to create different shots or scenes in our trailer, professional film trailers for inspiration as well as using it as an organisational platform for days when we are shooting. We will be uploading our storyboard and call sheets, for example like mine, to the right, I completed for last years AS filming.

I made the photo collage below on Photovisi. Photovisi is a useful tool as it allows me to make fun, imaginative collages using photographs or screenshots that I have taken completing tasks.

I have added the hyperlink to my groups GoogleDocs page on the right hand side of my blog roll so it can be quickly and efficiently viewed. This hyperlink will also update with our ideas as our project progresses. --->

WHATSAPP GROUP

A Whatsapp group was created for my group to stay in touch on our iPhones whilst we complete our film trailer project. Whatsapp will allow to keep in touch 'on the go' allowing us to send short 'snip its' of information to each other on the move; getting a quick response in return. I created a GoogleDocs page for us to share slightly larger amounts of information compared to our chat of Whatsapp where we can send short one word responses. We will be sharing information such as short quotes or photos that we could possibly use as inspiration for our trailer.

I made the photo above using Fotor; taking a photo on my iPhone of holding my phone with the Whatsapp group chat on the screen. I then imported the photo into Fotor and began to adapt the transparency of the photo; increasing the photos vibrancy and then dimming its opacity. I then moved it onto a background of the a New York/San Fransisco street adding 2 titles and the Whatsapp website at the bottom. Fotor is an extremely useful tool as I can easily, quickly edit photos making them look eye-catching as well as presenting them in a format that I have never done before. Fotor is completely new to me so I look forward to using this tool more in the future.

PLANNING: FINAL IDEA

I made a mindmup of our final idea for my film trailer project. Mindmup is a useful tool as I can quickly and efficiently present my ideas (and my groups) with a clear format using eye-catching colours and presentational devices including clear titles and relevant information.

We originally planned our final idea via GoogleDocs as a group - likewise with our other ideas.

HERE is a link to my GoogleDocs page or it can be viewed on the right hand side of my blog roll. -->

PLANNING: INITIAL IDEAS

I have made a mind map using bubbl.us of my groups initial ideas for our movie trailer. Bubbl.us is a useful tool as it allows me to quickly and efficiently account my research or ideas using a wide variety of different presentational formats including text boxes, text bubbles or mind maps.

My groups 3 initial ideas are presented in 3 different colours: idea 1 is in green, idea 2 is in pink and idea 3 is in dark blue.

RESEARCH: THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E TRAILER

I have made a trailer analysis of The Man From U.N.C.L.E trailer using SlideShare. SlideShare is a useful tool as it allows me to showcase my work in a unique and interesting format that is easy to read.

RESEARCH: GEMMA BOVERY TRAILER

I have made a trailer analysis of Gemma Bovery trailer using SlideShare. SlideShare is a useful tool as it allows me to showcase my work in a unique and interesting format that is easy to read.

Prior to uploading my presentation to SlideShare I intended on uploading my powerpoint presentation onto Animoto. However due to the video limit on Animoto of 10 seconds my presentation was too big as it lasted for 20 seconds.

I had also intended on adding a piece of music from the soundtrack of the film. I researched the songs that were used in the film, and most importantly the music featured in the trailer. The short, snappy percussion orchestral music I had intended on using was copyrighted so I couldn't legally use it. I wanted to imerse the viewer of my trailer analysis with the music actually used in the trailer.

I researched into the soundtrack of Gemma Bovery
Although I had intended on using Animoto to present my presentation, I intend on defineatly using it in the future for a blog post.

Below is my failed Animoto presentation with added music from the film. The song I used is featured in the film.

RESEARCH: READING OCR MODERATORS NOTES AND VIEWING EXEMPLAR MATERIAL

In class I looked at the brief for our film trailer (Brief 2) and looked at the OCR Guidance for the definition for a teaser trailer as well as theatrical trailer. With the help of our teacher, my group  also contacted the OCR subject officer, Tony Fahy for the correct answer.

Tony Fahys response
I also searched for the correct definition for trailer and teaser trailer. I made the photo below on PicMonkey

I looked in The Complete A-Z Media & Communication Handbook by Stuart Price for the correct definition of teaser trailer
I also searched on Google for the definition of trailer as well as looking on the Media marketing glossary from MediaKnowall.

I also covered the codes and conventions of a teaser/theatrical trailer including soundtrack, pace, location, mise-en-scene and camera angles. We looked at some professional teaser/theatrical trailers, consulting guidance for our own trailer from the MediaEdu website.

As advised by Tony Fahy I viewed previous A2 Media film trailers that have been awarded A band marks; one of which was by Cameron which is a 1 minute and 4 second long trailer recieving 34/40. As part of my group, I analysed his trailer as well as his film magazine front cover debating on the successes and negatives about his work. By doing this I will have a broader understanding of what type of work the examiner wants to receive such as the quality and duration of trailer. From looking at the negative aspects of his work, I will have a broader understanding of how I can make my work successful including all codes and conventions of a trailer suited to my chosen genre therefore making my trailer positively influential to my target audience (influencing them to buy a ticket to the film after viewing my trailer, film magazine front cover). I viewed this trailer via the OCR Media Weebly.

Below is a Piktochart of the positives and negatives of the exemplar student film trailer and exemplar student film magazine poster. Piktochart is a really useful tool as it allows me to present large amounts of information split up onto pages in a fun, attractive format.

BRIEF

We have chosen to complete Brief 2 a promotion package for a new film, to include a teaser trailer, together with:

  • A film magazine front cover, featuring the film
  • A poster for the film

TRELLO

I plan to update my Trello depending on the stages of my project: research, planning, construction and evaluation. Trello is a really useful tool as I can easily update and adjust my posts on my Trello 'diary', keeping me organised and efficient.
